Volusia County Florida History
Volusia County is located on the east coast of Central Florida and as of a 2005 Census Bureau estimate, the population was 496,575. There are 47 miles of beaches, with beachfront cities including Daytona Beach, Ormond Beach, and New Smyrna Beach. The county seat is DeLand and the largest city is Deltona.
The Volusia County region is rich with prehistoric sites which have fascinated and enlighten people about Florida history. The most common sites in the area are shell mounds. They are composed of millions of oyster, clam, and in some areas, freshwater snails. These mounds are actually the waste from countless ancient Native American meals dating back hundreds, even thousands of years. The mounds also contain other debris, including bone and stone tools along with enumerable pottery shards which have given archeologists information about the daily activities of the natives who once lived on or near each site. In addition to the shell mounds, the area boasts some of the oldest burial mounds in the Southeastern United States. One of the best examples of a burial mound is the Ormond Mound. It looks like an ordinary small hill; however, it contains the skeletal remains of over 125 prehistoric people.

Today, Volusia County is filled with many scenic and wonderful places to enjoy. Volusia’s county seat, DeLand, offers true Southern charm. Its downtown features antiquing, quaint restaurants, and grand old historic homes and buildings. Ormond Beach is known as the “Birthplace of Speed”. Many racing enthusiasts including automotive giants Louis Chevrolet and Henry Ford found its hard packed sand and ide expanse, perfect for fast racing. The racing tradition is still going strong today at the Daytona International Speedway, home of the famous Daytona 500. If you need something slower paced and love bass fishing and the finest nature has to offer, check out the St. Johns River, which links splendid parks with wildlife preserves along the County’s western boarder.
